Party, Party, Party...can you believe we have been partying for three weeks? Let's keep celebrating and give away more autographed books today! Everyone, world wide is invited...EVERYONE! Want free books? Play the game and/or comment in the comment section.
Carrie is the winner of Joy and Joyce's book yesterday. Congratulations! (email me, please)
Nadine Laman and I have met two months ago, but in many ways it feels much longer than that. Incidentally or not, we met on my birthday.
I had to see what was all the buzz about Nadine Laman and Kathryn’s Beach on Filedby. Seeing the words dyslexia and writer at the same page—in the same sentence, was my WOW moment. We started chatting, and Nadine heard my whining about lack of new books in English in our bookstores as I was unable to make online purchases. Not two weeks later, Kathryn’s Beach arrived at my home.
As I just commenced into my education on the world of publishing, Nadine answered many of my questions, sometimes even those unstated, on her blog, First Draft. Nadine is a mentor and friend who takes notice when I’m not around and takes time to email me and asks if everything is fine.
I am reading Nadine's High Tide. Kathryn is one of the most believable characters out there. Nadine's writing style is compelling in the sense you get a peek into Kathryn's mind and heart, making her all the more believable-and enjoyable.
What I learned from Nadine is that there are no obstacles in pursuing your dream-and if they still get in your way, how to easily avoid them.
With this blog party, which is really a terrific idea, she introduced so many great authors and readers I feel blessed to have met. She brought us together to celebrate what we love and what is our mission-writing our stories. Nadine magnanimously put others under the spotlight for the past few weeks. Today, Nadine, the stage is yours! Come out, take a bow and enjoy all that jazz!
Original music by Nadine's youngest son when he was 14. Photos from Seal Beach, California, taken by Nadine and family...often with a disposable camera (or a 35mm Minolta).
Thanks, Ivana. That was very sweet. You did a better job than I would have. I'm not surprised after the review you wrote for Kathryn's Beach. http://willingtoseeless.blogspot.com/2009/08/now-real-tss.html
I think everyone must know by now that Kathryn's Beach began as a short story emailed to a friend, a chapter a night. The whole thing was planned about as well as this blog party five minutes before I said, "Party!" (The planning came after the announcement.) In the short story, I gave Kathryn a frail but resilient personality. After Terrie, my friend, insisted I write a novel, then a second (the third was my idea), I was stuck with the characteristics I had given Kathryn in the short story.
Kathryn's Beach is the story of Kathryn's return home to resolve the past that haunted her. After knocking the wind out of Kathryn toward the end of KB and having her dust herself off, High Tide gave her a few more bumps and busies and laughs. All of the struggles and triumphs came together so she could meet her biggest challenge yet in Storm Surge.
I would rather not give away spoilers, since I know most people at the BLOG PARTY have not read my books, otherwise, ask me anything about the books, the differences in writing a trilogy, or my well documented ability to jump off cliffs!
Party game: As we were thinking about a party game, Nadine mentioned she hated Haiku poetry. I’m not a fan of it either, so let’s turn it into our advantage and have fun. Write a Haiku in the form 5-7-5 syllables that has to have the words Nadine and Beach anywhere in it. If it doesn’t give you a brain hemorrhage, do more than one. It’s not so difficult once you give it a try! (Oh yeah, giving away autographed books!)
This is the place to party without worrying about typos in the comments (who cares?) -- this is after all, only the FIRST DRAFT.

Good Morning, World! Let's Party!
ReplyDeleteGood morning
ReplyDeleteNadine
I Cannot
Write Haikus
But - hell, HELLO! GOOD MORNING! HAPPY PARTY DAY!
Carrie
Me neither!!! Ivy has lots of faith in us...if you can't write a Haiku, put Nadine & Beach in every post, EVERY ONE - heh heh heh...FOF
ReplyDeleteoh dyslexia moment, rolling on floor doesn't go FOF, it is ROF -- see? you don't have to be worried about typos with me, I don't care...if I did, I'd never write.
ReplyDeleteGood morning! Happy your party day Nadine!
ReplyDeleteThanks Missy, you get to start the Haikus...ha ha ha...
ReplyDeleteMorning from France.
ReplyDeleteWell your day Nadine. You made everybody else's day special for them. I hope after giving others a worthwhile time, exposing many books to a new audience, you receive the gift from us all that you deserve.
Good morning, Glyn. Thanks for helping me so much behind the scene.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying I deserve Haikus?
Oh I forgot to say Beach and Nadine...
ReplyDeleteAnd Happy Birthday to Ivy on the day we met, Carrie this last Tuesday...and I think, Glyn today!!!
Beachy Nadine and chica (if that makes no sense, go look at Jen Garsee's day)
Glyn next friday.
ReplyDeleteNo not haikus.
You deserve our respect and admiration for what you've done this past three weeks.
Good morning to one of the most talented people I've had the pleasure of meeting on this 'virtual' planet. I wish you so many bestsellers, Nadine. I'm rubbish at haikus but just for you ...
ReplyDeleteWaves huddle, whisper,
turn and leave the beach; whisper
'Come, Nadine! It's time!'
You'll be relieved to hear that I'm not planning on publishing a book of haiku any time soon!!! Have a wonderful party!!
Amanda (of MWC?)
Amanda, say hello and I will match what you just did.
ReplyDeleteOpps, I hadn't refreshed the page...did I mention I'm a blond from California?
ReplyDeleteWell, anyway...you just got two books Amanda!
Can the rest of you tell...we are just looking for excuses to 1) party; 2) give away books!
...jeepers! I forgot to say Beach cus there ain't no way I'm doing a Haiku!
ReplyDeleteBeach, Kathryn's Beach, Seal Beach...see what happens when I take a nap before I party?
Amanda, this haiku is beautiful. I'm not good at poetry but here's a try:
ReplyDeleteSoft sand under my feet
I am grateful to Nadine
For the Kathryn's Beach!
Well...maybe I'm starting to like haikus a little, but I'm not saying I'm going to write one...
ReplyDeleteIvy, without spoilers, where are you in HT?
ReplyDeleteoh snap! I keep forgetting to say "beach" I was better at chica, didn't miss once.
beach
Amanda started me thinking - anyone who buys a book today, I will match it with the next one free...both signed
ReplyDeleteBeach...I remembered! Yea me!
Nadine thaught me that my writing matters. There were numerous ocassions when I wanted to quit and give up. But now I know there are some people who believe in me and it keeps me going! Thank you, Nadine!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm on the part where Mr Goldstein and Kathryn search the web. Wonder how that will work out, hopefully with a happy ending...
Glyn, I blogged you last night.
Nadine, do you know bcomquest from FiledBy? I blogged about her too. I love her music!
Ivy, I do believe in you. Your writing is stronger on your blog too. I want to beta read your WIP for you. (Jen just sent hers to me last night, see? I'm not just being nice, I do want to beta read.)
ReplyDeletehttp://willingtoseeless.blogspot.com/
Very nice about Glyn and Kira.
Beach
Yes, I read her livejournal entry yesterday, The F Word...Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteIrene is awake and we are emailing. I sent her your link...made her smile. You are a gift, Ivy.
ReplyDeletebeach...
BTW, my kid made it to his first stop, the Pueblo where my friend is who isn't keen on lizards.
ReplyDeletebeach
Ivy, thank you for writing my day. You made me feel special. I'm glad we met.
ReplyDeletebeach
Yes, I'm awake and happy to be here. I have a lot of work to do today and counting on the fact there is enough time to do it all. I just posted an article on my blog "Accepting Sex for Love." http://irenewatson.typepad.com/irenes_weblog/
ReplyDeleteIf you feel like diverting please check it out. But, be sure to come back to this party. :-)
Nadine, I'm curious. When you write your fabulous books, do you relate your characters to anyone you know, and, are any of them partially you?
Oh...now I'm worried. Do want to make it clear that I am giving away party books too...no purchase required. I just meant, if you wanted two for one deal, there it was.
ReplyDeletebeach
I don't want to win (already got all of Nadine's books - they are fab!) but... here goes
ReplyDeleteGulls soar with effortless
Grace and see below, in innocence
Nadine on the beach
Tried to get in 'target' and .... well, imagine the rest. I think birds do target humans very purposefully!
Carrie
Amanda your Haiku is fab! Carrie
ReplyDeleteRay, from Monday's party just emailed me. I want to celebrate his news He inspires me to be a better writer. The link to Ray is in the sidebar.
ReplyDeleteFrom his email: Hi Nadine,
Thought I would pass on something that happened yesterday afternoon which made my day. It seems Glen Beck of FOX news on his show made some comment regarding The Shadow Government, not directed at my book I do not think but I sure got some calls and e-mails regarding it, and my pole numbers at Amazon sure dropped from over a million to 16,697 in a short period of time. Some one is buying my book. I am sorry I did not see the show. Also I tried to get on your blog to let your winner know I had to reorder my books and I will not be able to send it to him before Monday of next week. Would you let him know?
Have a great day.
Ray
Irene, good morning again!
ReplyDeleteThat is the question everyone asks. Isn't that curious? There is a story that when ask about his statues, Michelangelo said, he saw the angle in the marble and chiseled until he set her free. I often wonder if he did that on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel too.
I don't do any character sketches. I see a scene, in a still or freeze frame, then start it moving from that point. That is why I always begin in the middle of a conversation - like walking into a movie in progress. I watch the characters develop just as the reader will, except I have the keyboard.
People say often that I am Kathryn. Well, maybe. I can't write what I don't know. But I am also the kind of friend Maggie was. I push. I'm a straight shooter. I raise the bar. However, if I was going to say one character was a veiled me, it would be Karen.
I do have 27 cousins plus their spouses like I gave to Kathryn. We have 54 kids and some of them have kids. We do have Thanksgiving Dinner in a park (near where Carolyn H-J lives!). Some of my cousins helped me as early beta readers. With permission, I put Ilene in the story pretty much as she really is. David isn't Maggie's Dave. My cousin David is Nick, partly. He named Nick since I already had used Dave. My cousin Kathleen does write a family newsletter and that is in there, but I forget what name I gave her. I named Sister Theresa after my friend Terrie who started this mess - but the joke is the real Terrie isn't Catholic. Kathryn's beach is Seal Beach with some modifications. Joseph didn't become who I thought he would. Mr. Goldstein developed into a major character, which I hadn't expected (EVERYONE loves him).
When I did child abuse investigations no one died on my watch, but it could happen. So the story has some truth in it, but it is blurred. They really are fiction; I call them faux memoirs.
Guys, it is 4:30 AM here. I'm getting tired so I'm going to bed for a bit. Keep partying, I'll answer everyone when I come back. I want to thank Glyn, Ivy, and Carrie for keeping an eye on the party while I sleep...every day. Your support is priceless.
Love you, everyone...
The beach calls to her;
ReplyDeleteWords whispered on salty sprays.
Nadine's heart sings back.
That's a great one, Jeannine!
ReplyDeleteBTW, congrats on finishing your ms! That's F...F...Fantastic!
Nadine--thank you. For everything.
Group hug!
(geez, I almost wrote that in German...wrong state of mind :/ )
Groupen huggen? Don't think I know that in German! :-)
ReplyDeleteGood news Jeannine - must be a relief (but in some ways the work has only just begun).
I got Somebody from Amazon - hope to read it next week.
Carrie
I walk with Nadine
ReplyDeleteSmiling hand in hand we go
The beach smiles with us
I knew the Haiku wouldn't be a bad idea! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteCarrie, you were close. It's draining my brains out, I wish I didn't even start it!
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI am reading Kathryn's Beach now. I love the characters; love the setting. And I don't know of another book that explores the inner and outer life of a social worker. Nadine, you're the best. I can't wait to read all three.
Buy her books, folks! Support indie writers!!
(streamers flying....)
Hi, Susan!
ReplyDeleteSara has arrived the other day! Thank you so much, it's wonderful! Can't wait to start reading it, got to finish High Tide first!
Thanks, Ivana. I hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteIf you're so inclined, I'd love to hear what you think after you finish Seeking Sara Summers. (my email is: writergabriel@gmail.com)
I hope Nadine is having sweet dreams.... She is a very dear person.
Happy Happy Party Day!
ReplyDeleteI'm off to the beach
Where surf and sand meet my toes
Smell salt air - Divine!
I need to read ALL of Nadine's books! (And I'll always be grateful for Carolyn's tweets that led me here!
ReplyDeleteI'm posting about the blog party on Twitter today.
ReplyDeleteWarm welcome to anyone who shows up.
I wish I could stay
ReplyDeleteand party with friend Nadine
a wedding I will attend...
Susan,
ReplyDeleteI will, I promise. I always want to discuss books I read with the author, but don't get a chance often. I wish I had finished HT so I could swamp Nadine with questions. But we don't want to give away too much.
This poem doesn't meet the rules, but it's one of my personal favorites:
ReplyDeleteBest Friends
high heel shoe fetish
addicted to lipstick
Together, 12 years old again
This one is one of my favorites (and it perfectly described my life as a single mom a few years ago...)
ReplyDeleteWhat’s for dinner?
Moldy salad
Fermented apple juice
Rancid watermelon -
Frozen ravolis again
Carrie - gulls do target humans! About a month ago I was eating lunch near the water at Hampton Beach and a gull flew into my hair...I was so heebed out...I felt for a second that I was inside Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "The Birds..."
ReplyDeleteHave fun today blog party goers...
ReplyDeleteTime for me to meet the bride at the salon to get our hair and make up done...
Enjoy writing haiku's :-)
I love haikus. My first tweets were all haikus, but I gave up after awhile.
ReplyDeleteOK here goes:
Back to L.A. beach
She tries to reconcile the
past, Good job, Nadine!
Disclosure: I haven't read Kathryn's Beach yet; I'm next in line once Susan finishes. So I'd love to win the next book in the trilogy!
Thanks for organizing this massive blog party, Nadine. I have not participated in one before. You are very generous, and obviously having a lot of fun, too.
Wow Peggy - great that you joined us on here, tis fun, eh? I'm not sure I'm coming to your place for dinner though... not if it's frozen ravioli!! LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend. It's a three day weekend here in the UK.
Carrie
Can I just say that I read Sara Summers by Susan Gabriel too? I can highly recommend it - she has a lovely style and believable characters. I'm currently reading 'Scarpetta' and it's.... SCARY!!!
ReplyDeleteCarrie
Anne - making your tweets haikus - what a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteMy next haiku:
ReplyDeleteWhat's wrong with frozen
ravioli? As long as
you cook it, I'm there!
Greetings everyone, you are the bestest ever! No wonder I slept so well.
ReplyDeleteIvy, maybe I like Haikus a little now...I wasn't sure anyone would play.
Me too, my first blog party too!
Nadine, they are great, aren't they? Very creative and deep and funny!
ReplyDeleteI have to run, in about twenty minutes there will be twenty people for dinner...and they stay until Sunday afternoon!
(screams)
Check on you later!
Group hug!
Thank you, Ivy for doing this. Silly me, I wasn't going to have a day, Glyn insisted when I had to bunch people together last Monday. It is nice to have such good friends. Don't tell Carolyn H-J, but I do listen more than she thinks, heh heh heh
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your festival!
Now that I've had some coffee, I just realized what Anne said about making tweets into Haikus. What an over achiever! I do enjoy your newsletter though.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.authentic-alternatives.com/blog/
New info, we were visited by someone from our 41st country!!! You guys are so amazing. You have taken my idea, and been the wind beneath its wings. Whatever sucess this is, is due to the people factor!
ReplyDeleteWow, Nadine your party has really taken off!
ReplyDeleteWay to go girl!
Cathy
Cathy! You came! Thank you so much. Wow! Read your email. Oh my, this is just really making me teary. Tough week, personally, and this is so amazing. Group hug!
ReplyDeleteWhoooo-hooo! 42 countries! Jump in, even if you don't haiku. I'm getting in trouble sitting here without supervision.
ReplyDeleteOooh, we can't let you get into trouble Nadine... (checked my emails - thanks mate *kiss*)
ReplyDeleteAnne sent a sample of her haiku tweets. Bet she didn't think about I'd probably post them. ha ha ha
ReplyDelete5-29-08
Haiku: Writing article –next week’s newsletter, I pull – rabbit out of hat.
5-30-08

6-12-08

Me thinks Anne is cute and a nice kind of weird...Nope, I'm still not thinking about being a twitter person. I do like blogging though.
"A nice kind of weird." You know me very well for not knowing me well, Nadine! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIf you are just sitting staring at your monitor waiting for the next post, like I am... go listen to the audio that was posted on Irene Watson's day (look in sidebar archives for the link).
ReplyDeleteIrene's info was really interesting about the personality of reviewers needs to match the book to get the best review. I thought that was very interesting. Bet the same is true for agents, which is a shot in the dark most times.
Correction on Anne's link. http://www.authentic-alternatives.com/resources.html
ReplyDeleteJust a reminder, today's winners will be posted on Monday's party...you already knew that, right?
ReplyDeletewhoo hoo! It's been rockin' whilst I've been away (fighting). :-)
ReplyDeleteNadine, your books are wonderful, I'm sure everyone here and who visits will enjoy your engaging stories about Kathryn. I'm priviledged to have visited her beach.
And the seagulls were pretty kind to us too. There's a guy manages a car park in England who is regularly bombarded by one gull -it has a personal vendetta against the guy.
Mostly though - birds are cool. I love watching them. I often stop to watch when walking down a street or out and about - on a journey the other day I saw 11 red kites!
My daughter brought her new boyfriend home today - he's drop dead gorgous! Oh to be young again...
I'm waffling. I'll stop now.
Carrie...
For those who want to know about the 18 year old's solo journey 2,800+ miles, report is in that he left the Pueblo at the crack of dawn. He was given a Native American blessing before he left and lots of Indian bread to take for the trip. Last seen 6 hrs ago, headed for the yellow brick road. I forgot to refresh his memory on tornado safety. I'm doing better with day 2, I was a wreck yesteday.
ReplyDeleteAh - he'll be fine. It's hard to send them out in to the big bad world (and starting with a journey of 3000 miles is quite a start!).
ReplyDelete*BIG HUG*
Carrie
*sigh*
ReplyDeleteWe all take journeys in our life - some at different times and in different stages too. Kathryn takes some amazing journeys - physical and emotional - in your books. I'm sure you are on a path too.
ReplyDeleteUpon the beach wave
Wash clear our footsteps as we
Pass into the future
Carrie
darn... should read WAVES!
ReplyDeleteWorks for me either way.
ReplyDeleteHave a look at this
ReplyDeletehttp://www.hywelalyn.blogspot.com/
There's a similar thing going on there to our party here.
Well Good for them!
ReplyDeleteDon't think they nicked your idea and it certainly doesn't look as good as ours! One glance our way and they will be dying of envy!
ReplyDeleteAnything that connects readers and writers is good. Too much of that diva stuff there for a while. I totally didn't get that one. I hope they give away books. I think we should give back to readers.
ReplyDelete*I didn't mean those people or person was a diva, I meant some authors were a bit too full of themselves, and it is time to think more about readers. If no one reads books, what is the point?
ReplyDeleteoh, you mean being an author isn't just a huge ego trip? Whoops... LOL!!
ReplyDeleteCarrie
Hello, everyone!
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish you could have seen the firework minutes ago, that was so beautifuuuuuul! You are all cordially invited to the fiesta tomorrow, with plenty of good food, nice wine, lots of things going on(concerts, book promotions and signings...)These days my little town wakes up!
Lots of love,
Ivy
You never know, Ivy...I might come some year.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have you here. When I was a kid I loved this part of year more than Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWow, these Haikus are really beautiful! Enjoy your party, I'm bringing the kid to sleep, and I'll be back...hopefully, if the twenty plus let me get to the computer!
Just said goodbye to a dear friend who was visiting for the afternoon. I love my online friends, but there's nothing like a real, live, in-person hug from someone who has known you 20 years.
ReplyDeleteNadine, even though we haven't known each other that long, I wish I could give you a big in-person hug. You're the best. Thanks for all you do. Thanks for throwing a blog party and promoting authors.
Show her you care, folks. If you haven't already, buy Nadine's books!
Ah, hugs, how I miss them! Nadine hugs good. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is half Italian and half Croatian - she's told me a lot about Croatia. I've had friends who've been there. One day I'd like to visit, but I think I'll miss tomorrow's fiesta alas!
Have a great day everyone - I'm off for a bath and bed.
Carrie
Goodnight, Carrie, sweet dreams!
ReplyDeleteWhew! I've been making a list of all the winners. I hope everyone has emailed me. I think I need Peggy's address.
WoW! So far we have given away 23 books, not counting today.
And me. The fiesta sounds great Ivana. What's going on. Tell me monday, when we'll be back for fun and games for another week!
ReplyDeleteNight all, bonsoir as they say around these parts.
Whopps! 24 books.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan! Someday we will meet. Carrie is right, I do give good hugs. I like them. Waving at you on messenger yesterday was fun.
ReplyDeleteGoodnight, Glyn, sweet dreams!
I must be on UK time, I'm getting sleepy...
ReplyDeleteI'm on Ohio time and I feel DRUGGED!
ReplyDeleteI just found the song for tomorrow's weekend intermission!
ReplyDeleteJust so you know, the party isn't over until I take down the party banner on the mast, more to come next week!
ReplyDeleteI am watching your YouTube and imagine Kathryn walking down the beach...the music fits her mood perfectly, there are highs and lows, and it's melancholic and hopeful at the same time....wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI never thanked you for putting the link to my blog into your mail signature. According to my sitemeter, many visits come from there.
Oh, and before it slipps my mind again-please, count me in for the mail signature for Connie!
Ivy, you are a precious person. I am honored that we are friends. I want to watch you grow as a writer and see you soar.
ReplyDeleteFondly, Nadine
Fabulous idea....Why didn't I think of it?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThanks JL, welcome!
ReplyDeleteI reread the entire party notes and comments. Wow! You guys are awesome!
ReplyDeleteNot as awesome as you nadine.
ReplyDelete*blush* thanks.
ReplyDeleteWaaaa!! I can't write poetry Nad.
ReplyDeleteMa
HI Ma! You don't see me writing poetry do you? NOOOooooOOOooO! Click on the top of the page - on the mast where it says First Draft and switch over to Nick's day. Then you don't have any poetry worries.
ReplyDelete
